Monday Morning Memo----November 12

Good Morning:

As a result of some travel plan changes, the MMM will appear this week and not next.

Our own Esperanza Enhancement Team is planning another fund raiser, as an added feature to the Hospitality Committee Happy Hour, being scheduled for December 10th at the ramada. The event will be a short auction, using the auctioneer services of the always fun and amusing Lilly Sheehan. Lilly has been the auctioneer for the Enhancement Team’s auctions for several years, and always brings down the house with her humorous presentation. To facilitate this effort, donations of wine, and Christmas goodies are being solicited for gift baskets to be auctioned. If you are able to help, or have an idea, please call Tess Ewing at 625-7353, or Barb McCalpin, 867-8067. A pick up of any auction item can be arranged.

Please remember that all the proceeds of the Enhancement Team’s efforts come right back to us in the way of improvements to our subdivision.

Further details on the Happy Hour will be forthcoming from the Hospitality Committee.

The regular November Board meeting will be held at the ramada at 1:00 next Monday, November 19th. The agenda appears below. The Board will be adopting a budget for 2008 at that meeting. The November adoption date is mandated by our organizational documents. A budget committee meeting was held November 5th, at which meeting it was determined at a moderate increase in the annual dues would be made. The last increase was approximately 4 years ago, and the one before that, about 10 years. The primary impetus to the increase is the necessity to replace some pool equipment that is about 10 years old and nearing the end of its useful life, as well as the moderate increases in all prices that are faced in nearly every category of HOA operations. Most of the cost increases in the budget are being covered by cost savings elsewhere, but not all of them.

The Board is also budgeting for some increases in labor costs at the pool. Presently, much of the pool work is being done by volunteers, and because of the repetitive nature of the work and the fact that part of it is mandated by law to be done daily, the use of volunteer labor will no longer meet the needs. Thus, there is a need to contract for this to be done. Failure to comply with county regulations could result in our pool being closed by the authorities.

Another matter that will be discussed is a proposal to keep the pool closed until a threshold of 60 degrees is reached daily. During parts of the year, this would necessitate the pool remaining closed during a part of what are now posted hours of operation. The costs for natural gas to keep the pool heated during colder periods is now the second largest line item in the HOA budget. The solar system has helped enormously, but its use is limited during parts of the year. Such a change would necessitate some people changing their normal pool use times, but the inconvenience to a few is believed to be overridden by the financial aspects to the HOA at large.

Kudos to our neighbor and EE resident Patricia Sharpe, who set up and managed the Bill Milne Memorial Fund for Bill’s widow Dottie. The fund was successful and aided Dottie considerably. Patricia did this entirely on her own volition, and it was a fine and generous gesture of helpfulness to another in need. Thanks very much Pat!

In case you are wondering about what is going on in Arroyo No. 9, a representative of the county advises they are putting in a gabion-basket footing along the previously shot-creted areas, and reinforcing the footings with additional shot-crete where they have cracked. They are also adding a concrete apron along the top of the wall, to keep trees and large plant roots from further damaging the walls by not allowing them to grow directly against the same, as they have been doing.

A part of our walking trail passes this area, which, courtesy of "Stoney" Brown has been neatly outlined with stones. These are being disrupted by the work going on. So far the county has replaced them.

If you have noted some unusual activity in your mesquite trees, such as findings numerous small branches which appear to have been cut from the tree--it’s the Cinch Beetle. The Beetle is more prevalent on a three-five year cycle, and this is one of the years. The Beetle is reported to be more of a nuisance than an environmental hazard.

Neighborhood Watch block captains and co-captains will meet this coming Saturday, November 17th at the ramada at 9:00 a.m. This is an important meeting, and all persons involved in the Neighborhood Watch program are asked to attend. Questions may be directed to Neighborhood Watch chairperson, Mary Beth Wallace, 399-0299.

Have a good week. We hope you enjoy the Veteran’s Day holiday today.
